Broccoli Sprouting Seed Health Benefits

Broccoli sprouts are regarded as a nutritional phenomenon and are one of the most popular seed types for sprout and microgreen growers.

Broccoli sprouts are especially popular for their high levels of glucoraphanin, a compound which the body converts into sulforaphane. There has been growing evidence linking sulforaphane to a range of health benefits.

Raw vegetables produce higher levels of sulforaphane than cooked vegetables, which makes broccoli sprouts such a popular choice for maximum sulforaphane intake over vegetables such as broccoli.

Broccoli sprouts contain very high levels of vitamin C, an excellent immune booster and a source of antioxidants. They also contain high levels of vitamin A, calcium and iron.

  5. Empty the water, fill the jar with water, give them a shake, and empty the water.
  6. Leave the jar on its side for the water to drain.

  8. Your sprouts should be ready if soft enough.
  9. Store the broccoli sprouts in the fridge.

Tips

  • Broccoli sprouts generate heat as they grow. Avoid overheating and spoilage by not keeping more than 200g in a single container.
  • Store the sprouts in a tupperware container with holes (improvise if necessary). Sprouts like air circulation.
  • Don’t forget to drain. The most common cause of sprouts going bad is stagnant water.

FAQ

Which type of Broccoli Sprouting Seeds should I use?

The most popular broccoli sprouting seed is calabrese (this one), mainly because it’s considered to be more nutritious. Broccoli raab is another type of sprouting seed (which we also sell).

Why are my broccoli sprouts mouldy?

A very common question, 99% of the time what looks like mould is actually root hairs. These fuzzy-like hairs are perfectly normal and safe, and will disappear with a rinse.

Why do my broccoli sprouts smell?

It’s normal for broccoli sprouts to have a very slight smell of sulphur on account of their glucoraphanin content. It’s also normal for them to be odourless. If they smell like anything else, especially rancid, then they have most likely rotted and should be thrown away. This might happen if allowed to soak for too long, or when using a dirty jar.

Why do I have un-sprouted broccoli seeds left in the bottom of my sprouter?

You probably need to drain more between rinses. Be sure to give your broccoli seeds a good shake to remove as much water as possible.

How should I store my sprouting broccoli seeds ?

Keep them in a cool, dark and dry place, either sealed in the pouch or in a sealed container.

Are sprouting broccoli seeds safe?

Our organic broccoli sprouts are lab-tested and verified free of e.coli and salmonella. Unlike, normal vegetable seeds, our broccoli seeds are specially grown for sprouting and microgreens, and to be free of bacteria and harmful pathogens.
