Many good things have come out of Germany and Kohlrabi Purple or otherwise known as the German Turnip is another example of this. A showstopper of a sprout – vibrant and bright, it will add sparkle and colour to any dish. Its purple roots are highlighted by green leaves with a purple fringe. A member of the Brassica family, once sprouted it has a mild and sweet taste.  This seed can be used to grow microgreens or sprouts. Easy to sprout; full of vitamins and nutrients there is not much that can go wrong with sprouting this wonderful seed.

Growing Instructions

How to Grow as Sprouts

  1. Add 1-3 tablespoons of kohlrabi sprouting seeds to a sprouting jar.
  2. Fill with water, leave for 15 minutes, and then rinse.
  3. Fill again with fresh water and stir the seeds to ensure they’re covered.
  4. Leave to soak for 8 hours or overnight.
  5. Empty the water, fill the jar with water, give them a shake, and empty the water.
  6. Leave the jar on its side for the water to drain.
  7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for 3-5 days.
  8. Your sprouts should be ready if soft enough.
  9. Store the sprouts in the fridge.

How to Grow as Microgreens

  1. Prepare: Fill a shallow tray or container with soil or coconut coir and moisten it lightly.
  2. Plant: Sprinkle kohlrabi seeds evenly over the soil surface.
  3. Cover: Place a second tray or a light cover on top to create a dark environment.
  4. Germinate: Wait 2-3 days for the seeds to sprout, keeping the soil moist.
  5. Grow: Once sprouted, remove the cover and place the tray near a sunny window.
  6. Water: Keep the soil moist by watering gently as needed.
  7. Harvest: Cut the microgreens just above the soil level when they are 2-3 inches tall.
  8. Enjoy: Rinse and enjoy your kohlrabi microgreens fresh in salads, sandwiches, or as a garnish.
