Country of Origin: Italy
Botanical Name: Allium ampeloprasum
Packaged in the UK in resealable pouch
Shelf-life: 6 months minimum
Taste: Fresh sweet onion. A super tasty garnish

Leek sprouts have an incredible flavour. Leek can contain large quantities of the sulfur-containing compound allicin which is anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal. The seed is extremely difficult to source but you only need a small amount and we think it’s worth it.

How to Eat Leek Sprouts

Sprouted leek seeds add a mild, onion-like flavour to dishes. They can be used in salads, sandwiches, and stir-fries, or as a garnish for soups. They’re also great in scrambled eggs or omelettes, to give a fresh twist to your breakfast.

Growing Instructions

How to Grow Leek Sprouts

  1. Add 1-3 tablespoons of sprouting leek seeds to a sprouting jar.
  2. Fill with water, leave for 15 minutes, and then rinse.
  3. Fill again with fresh water and stir the seeds to ensure they’re covered.
  4. Leave to soak for 8 hours or overnight.
  5. Empty the water, fill the jar with water, give them a shake, and empty the water.
  6. Leave the jar on its side for the water to drain.
  7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for 3-5 days.
  8. Your sprouts should be ready if soft enough.
  9. Store the leek sprouts in the fridge.

TIPS

  • Sprouts generate heat as they grow. Avoid overheating and spoilage by not keeping more than 200g in a single container.
  • Store the sprouts in a tupperware container with holes (improvise if necessary). Sprouts like air circulation.
  • Don’t forget to drain. The most common cause of sprouts going bad is stagnant water.
